Nádor Éva: Yellow-Star Houses - People, Houses, Fates (2015)
ISBN: 9786155346217
That history lives with us even if we may not be aware of it is a cliché. Walking along our prominent public squares or the bank of the Danube, we cannot ignore the traces of centuries piling up. However, when we enter an apartment house, we rarely think about the stories those walls are telling us.
On June 16, 1944, the mayor of Budapest, issued a statue, stating that the residence of the people with yellow stars had to be marked with a yellow star as well. Almost 2000 houses were designated for the Jews.
The book includes almost 83 recollections, the stories of the former residents of the yellow-star houses. Although the stories are subjective, they illustrate historical reality well. Besides being individual, they describe the shared fate of the Jewish families of Budapest at that time.
Providing the reader with an objective, historical overview based on facts was the particular goal of the introductory essay. In addition to the stories of the yellow-star houses, the book includes documents and photographs preserved in family archives.
